We all remember that feeling that we had when we got a new toy: that warm and fuzzy feeling, right? Well, there was a time when I got that feeling for a brand new Nerf Gun. When I was a kid, there was nothing I loved more than running around the house, inside and out, shooting foam darts at relatives, neighbors, stray cats, random passersby, etc. It filled me with joy like nothing else.
The toy guns were great. Nerf had manufactured a product that looked good and felt good to use. But then, I grew up. Flash forward. I’m now in my late 20’s and married, currently residing in New York City, NY. All was quiet on the foam dart front; out of Nerf or nothing, it was nothing. However, I recently had my passion to Nerf, so to speak, reignited after the birth of my son last year.
In preparation of all the Nerf Battles I have in store for him, I have decided to build this blog to share and compile a vast array of knowledge and know-how to perpetuate the memory of one of my fondest childhood activities. And when my son is old enough? I will hand down this legacy of foam and continue the tradition…

So, first things first, What are Nerf Blasters?
Nerf Blasters are plastic toy guns that shoot projectile darts made of a foam material. They are bright and colorfully painted. They are almost always modeled with a futuristic design and don’t resemble real guns very much at all. Nerf Blasters or guns also support a large amount of Nerf accessories and Nerf gun attachments. All of these factors make it the perfect toy for kids of all ages. (Occasionally even large, 6-foot tall kids with mustaches and day jobs.)
Variety is the spice of life. Does that apply to Nerf too?
Nerf Blasters come in various different shapes and sizes, from pistol-type blasters all the way up to sniper rifle inspired blasters. There are single shell-loaded bolt-action blasters, while others use “clips” or magazines, or revolving chambers. You can pretty much find a Nerf blaster for every real life weapon variation that exists.
The mechanism behind the actual firing of the foam darts is only one of a few different models: Either spring-loaded, or air-pressure pump, or plunger designs. Of these internal designs, the direct plunger variant seems to be preferred for superior longevity and reliability, as well as the general strength and power of the blaster. Modders also generally prefer the Direct Plunger blasters and as such most Nerf gun attachments are used primarily on those blasters.
So, what can I do with my brand new Nerf Blaster?
So you have these lightweight, colorful foam dart blasters that are fun in any situation. Solo target practice? Check. One on one urban warfare throughout your apartment or house? Check. Full on “Team Dartmatch” with a group of friends in a park or backyard? Check. Nerf provides all of the fun you could have without the mess and cleanup of a water gun and without the inherent danger of the realistically modeled Airsoft/BB guns. Clean wholesome fun for the whole family to enjoy.

The fun doesn’t end there, guys. There’s one more thing to help Nerf really stand out above its competitors in the Blaster Business: a large community of fans and supporters. Within that community there lies the subculture of modders and aftermarket Nerf mods. These modders customize and add parts and pieces as they see fit. Aftermarket alterations all around, including themed painting, increasing the power and range, add-ons and aftermarket Nerf gun attachments. Within these pages, I will delve deeper into the underground modding community of the almighty Nerf.
